China finances Cape Verde hospital with 3.65 million-euro fund

Praia, Cape Verde, 01 Dec – China will finance the building of a new maternity wing and an outpatients’ center at Hospital Agostinho Neto, in the Capital of Cape Verde, Cidade da Praia, work which ahs been estimated to cost 3.65 million euros, officials said.

The agreement for the two projects was signed this week by the Cape Verde Foreign Affairs Minister, Victor Borges, and China’s Ambassador to Cape Verde, Sun Rongmao.

Work on the hospital, which is the country’s largest, is expected to end in 2009.

As part of the agreement, China will also partially fund new hospital equipment and materials.

Simultaneously, Chinese cooperation will provide 1.9 million euros for the construction of an infirmary for the surgical bloc of Hospital Agostinho Neto and a hall of residence for Chinese doctors in Praia.

According to China’s Ministry of Education, cooperation agreements with Africa in the realm of education have involved over 500 teachers of science, technology, secondary and higher education.

Around 1,200 African students receive educational grants from China each year. This number is expected to double in the next five years, Chinese officials said this week during the Forum of the Ministries of Education of China and the African Nations, which took place in Beijing.

Representatives from 17 African countries were present in the Chinese capital – Benin, Congo, Egypt, Mali, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Algeria, Mozambique, Tanzania, Djibouti, Mauritania, Cameroon and Senegal.

Mozambique’s Education Minister, Aires Bonifácio Ali, welcomed the initiative and said he wanted to increase cooperation with China in Education and Science. (macauhub)
