State power utility wants to give all regions electricity by 2010

21 December 2005

Maputo, Mozambique, 21 Dec – The new president of Mozambique’s state power company, EDM, has said he aims to bring electricity to all parts of the country by 2010.

Manuel Cuambe, speaking Tuesday at a EDM board meeting to plan strategies for the coming four years and the 2006 budget, noted that power is still produced from diesel generators in some central and northern districts, rather than from a grid based on energy from the giant Cahora Bassa hydro on the River Zambezi.

To give better access to electricity in these areas EDM plans to invest up to US$ 50 million per year, partially funded by foreign aid, to improve its generating and power transmission capacities, added Cuambe. (macauhub)
