Over 1,000 km of Angolan highways to be rehabilitated

28 December 2005

Luanda, Angola, 28 Dec – Some 1,200 kilometers of roads in Angola are to be repaired and modernized in a 12-month program involving the Public Works Ministry, the National Highways Institute, town councils and construction firms, officials said Wednesday.

The highway rehabilitation project was approved by the government in July and 80 percent of building contracts have already been allocated.

Some 385 km of road across Angola will be upgraded with foreign aid from Germany and Portugal and state funds used for the remaining stretches of highways.

The current rehabilitation project is only for roads and not the many bridges damaged or destroyed during Angola’s civil conflict of nearly three decades that ended in 2002. (macauhub)
