Congolese mining firms want to export through Angolan port of Lobito

2 January 2006

Lobito, Angola, 2 Jan – Mining companies in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are interested in exporting gold through the Angolan port of Lobito, an official has said.

Jose Carlos Gomes, director of the Port of Lobito, told state news agency Angop that 4,000 metric tons of goods were awaiting export from the port. This situation indicates healthy prospects for Lobito, which currently only handles a half of its freight capacity, he added.

Total cargo passing through Lobito in 2005 was 945,000 tons compared to 834,000 tons in 2004, said Gomes.

Expansion and containerization of Lobito, including modernization of the port’s 25 kilometers of rail track, gets underway this year, he added. (macauhub)
