Luanda, Angola, 2 Jan – The eleven companies operating in Angola’s ornamental rocks industry produced a total of 38,000 metric tons of black granite last year, an official has said.
Minister of Geology and Mining Manuel Africano said Saturday that all but 3,000 tons of the black granite were exported, netting tax receipts of US$ 1.4 million from gross sales revenue of US$ 6 million on the shipments.
Exports of ornamental rocks from Angola showed a 137 percent increase in 2005 over the previous year, with respective rises of gross receipts and tax revenues of 89 percent and 178 percent, added the minister.
A copper mining project in Uige province requires infrastructure investment of US$ 4.1 billion and the company heading the venture, AP Services of Angola, is seeking foreign capital to help fund the scheme, the minister added.
Angola’s diamond sector is a major contributor to increased state earnings and production reached 6.7 million carats in 2005, generating gross revenues of over US$ 1 billion. (macauhub).
