Nine percent of Portugal’s active population out of work

Lisbon, Portugal, 17 Jan – Around 9 percent of the active Portuguese population, or 479,000 people were unemployed at the end of 2005, according to figures published Monday in Lisbon by Portugal’s Employment and Professional Training Institute.

The number of unemployed at the end of last year represented a year on year increase of 2.2 percent.

In absolute terms, the number of registered unemployed people increased by 10,521 between December 2004 and December 2005.

Figures from the National Statistics Institute for the third quarter of 2005 showed that the active Portuguese population totaled 5.55 million people (in a total population of 10.569 millions) and the number of unemployed people was 429,900, giving an unemployment rate for the period of 7.7 percent.
