Cape Verde government opens new TV and radio transmitter on Santiago Island

Praia, Cape Verde, 15 May – The Cape Verde government opened a new television and radio transmission center in the Santa Catarina area of Santiago Island, which will serve some 50,000 people, government officials said.

The transmitter will serve areas in the interior of the municipality of Santa Catarina, on the capital island of Cape Verde, as well as some areas of the neighboring council area of Sao Miguel, according to a government statement.

Due to constant breakdowns because of blackouts and vandalism, the Santa Catarina transmitter had been out of action since 2000.

Its rehabilitation required the reconstruction of the antenna, installation of new transmission equipment and a new power distribution cable from the headquarters to the Assomada area.

The FM transmitter installed will also serve the council area of Sao Miguel, Pedra Badejo, Sao Salvador do Mundo and Tarrafal.

Santiago Island is the most populated of the Cape Verde archipelago, with around 240,000 inhabitants, 117,000 of which in the country’s capital, Praia. (macauhub)
