Bissau, Guinea Bissau, 24 May – The African Development Bank has granted Guinea Bissau a loan of US$8.12 million for agricultural and rural projects that will benefit 13,600 families, officials said Tuesday.

A source from the Ministry of the Economy said that the funding was provided to support the Rehabilitation of the Agricultural and Rural Sector Project (PRESAR), with the aim of also boosting food safety in the country.

With this in mind, the source said, PRESAR plans to set up conditions to increase production of rice, horticultural products and animals with short life-cycles in the Northern, Eastern and Bissau regions.

Due to several factors, Guinea Bissau is faced with a famine situation in several regions of the country, particularly the south, where spring tides flooded agricultural fields and destroyed the crops. (macauhub)
