Brazil to open Product Distribution Center in Portugal on June 20

9 June 2006

Brasilia, Brazil 09 June – The Brazilian Product Distribution Center in Portugal, located in Vialonga, north of Lisbon, is due to be inaugurated on June 20 by the Brazilian Foreign Trade Minister, Luiz Fernando Furlan, officials said Friday.

The Distribution Center, which involves an investment of 280,000 euros, will initially be home to 80 of the 165 Brazilian companies that have rented space in the center and will create 450 dierct jobs, according to information from Brazilian export promotion agency, APEX.

Vialonga was chosen amongst other possible location taking into account the price of renting the 1,500 square meter area and the proximity of Lisbon’s airport and port (some 15 kilometers away).

Lisbon’s Brazilian Product Distribution Center will host, amongst others, swimming pool accessory companies, food, animal feed, sporting goods and car part companies, from a total of 20 sectors of Brazil’s economy.

The Portuguese distribution center will serve the Iberian and African markets.

APEX has three distribution centers (one in Dubai, one in Miami and another in Frankfurt) and has already said it is interested in opening another in Shanghai, China.

This year APEX also plans to open a distribution center in Warsaw, Poland.

One of the main advantages for companies that are part of the center is cost, as the total area is rented by APEX, which divides it up into smaller parts for the companies.

Another advantage is that the companies pay customs taxes only when their products are sold and leave the distribution center.

The main aim is to encourage Brazilian companies to move into international markets, by opening subsidiaries overseas, after remaining in the distribution centers for 18 months. (macauhub)
