Spain sets up cooperation office exclusively for Cape Verde

28 June 2006

Praia, Cape Verde, 28 June – Spain is set to create a technical cooperation office exclusively for cape Verde, as well as supporting the Cape Verdean capital’s bid to be given UNESCO world heritage status, Cape Verde officials said.

According to a statement from the Cape Verde Prime Minister’s office, which this week met in Praia with Spanish Foreign Minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos, the setting up of the cooperation office is “a clear sign of increased relations between the two countries.”

“Spain is also making efforts to support a project by the Cidade Velha [the old part of the country’s capital, Praia] to become a UNESCO world heritage site. The new Santiago municipal area has been the subject of restructuring and refurbishment work, with the support of Spanish technical cooperation,” the statement said.

During the Moratinos’ visit, which followed that of Queen Sofia of Spain last month, Cape Verde said it intended to set up a cooperation program with the Iberian country in order to stabilize projects involving both countries.

The creation of the program, the government said, “will make resources more predictable and provide a better framework for actions to be carried out within the scope of multi-year investment programs in Cape Verde.”

Spain is currently one of Cape Verde’s main international donors and it is expected to join the direct budget support mechanism for the archipelago, promoted by the World Bank, the European Union and the Netherlands.

Cape Verde was also visited by Cuba’s External Affairs Minister, Filipe Pérez Roque.

Roque travelled to the archipelago to assess the Program for Economic and Technical-Scientific Cooperation between the countries for the 2006-2007 period, approved during the Mixed Commission, which met in Praia on November 21, 22 and 23 of 2005.

The program covers economic and business relations, education and training, health, agriculture, the environment and fisheries, culture, defense and youth. (macauhub)
