14 July 2006

Maputo, Mozambique, 14 July – The number of visitors to Mozambique’s hotels rose 6.5 percent in the first quarter of 2006, against the year-ago period, mainly due to a greater number of foreign visitors to the country, Mozambique’s national Statistics Institute (INE) said.

The monthly survey of hotel facilities, carried out by INE, showed that between January and March the total number of visitors was 84,225, or 7.8 percent less than in the last quarter of 2005 (91,398).

Of the total for the first quarter, 42,581 were Mozambican tourists, or 5.9 percent more than in the year-ago period.

The number of foreigners increased 7.2 percent, totaling 41,544.

Also according to INE, the number of overnight stays increased 18.3 percent in the first quarter to 196,958, with foreigners once again contributing most to the rise.

According to figures recently published by the Mozambican airport authority, the number of passengers transported increased 3.7 percent between January and March, against the same period of last year, to 84,000. (macauhub)
