Business volume of Mozambican industry rises 35 percent in first quarter

Maputo, Mozambique, 10 Aug – The business volume of Mozambican industry rose 35 percent in the first quarter compared to the same period of last year, driven by furniture, metallurgy and paper pulp, indicates data released Thursday by the Mozambican National Statistics Institute.

The figures reveal that the furniture and mattress industry recorded a year-on-year business volume increase of around 58.8 percent, with the index reaching 271 points.

In the base metallurgy industry the increase was 39.6 percent to the highest index of all, 294.7 points, nearly three times the base-year figure.

Paper pulp and cardboard manufacturing recorded year-on-year growth of 42.5 percent. In textiles the increase was 35 percent and in food and beverages 26.4 percent.

The only retreats were recorded in the categories of metal products (minus 2.3 percent) and automotive vehicles (minus 13.5 percent).

The general index stood at 254.4 points, 2.5 times the base-year figure, with 2.8 percent growth over the previous quarter. (macauhub)
