China’s Huawei to supply 3G technology to Vodafone in Spain

14 August 2006

Shenzen, China, 14 Aug – China’s Huawei is to supply Vodafone with technological solutions for the British company’s third generation (3G) mobile phone network in the Spanish market, the Chinese company has said.

Without specifying the value of the deal, Huawei said that Vodafone had some 1.2 million 3G customers in Spain.

Huawei, which recently won a tender to supply a GSM network to Brazil’s Vivo, has been trying to boost its international sales as Chinese operators are currently trying to cut costs ahead of investments related to the launch of 3G networks in China.

The Chinese company directly competes with Swedish giant Ericsson in contracts for large operators such as Vodafone and British Telecom.

Last year, Huawei’s international contracts were valued at around US$4.8 billion, representing some 57 percent of the company’s total turnover. (macauhub)
