Mozambican population to reach 20.3 million in 2007

17 August 2006

Maputo, Mozambique, 17 Aug – The Mozambican population is expected to reach a total of 20.3 million within a year, the man responsible for the 3rd General Census of the Population of Mozambique, João Loureiro, estimated Wednesday.

There are currently 19.8 million Mozambicans, according to figures from the Mozambican National Statistics Institute (INE).

The Mozambican government plans to carry out the 3rd population census next year, after the last census, which was carried out 10 years ago, found the country had 17 million inhabitants.

Loureiro said that the Mozambican population was growing at an annual rate of 2.4 percent, as a result of natural growth (difference between number of births and deaths) and migrations (from and into the country).

In 1980, in the country’s first census, the Mozambican population was estimated to be 15.6 million. (macauhub)
