US grants Cape Verde US$14 million to build reservoirs

Praia, Cape Verde, 06 Sept – The government of Cape Verde Tuesday signed an agreement with the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) worth US$14 million for the construction of water reservoirs on the islands of Santo Antão, Fogo e São Nicolau, Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress reported.

Under the terms of the agreement, Cape Verde’s is expected to move ahead with projects to build the reservoirs, including infrastructures for conserving land and water, rural extension projects, technical assistance and setting up quality control centers, Inforpress said.

The MCA, which is part of US development agency the Millennium Challenge Corporation, will coordinate the project.

Cape Verde’s Environment and Agricultural minister, Madalena Neves, said that the projects were currently being prepared, and construction work was expected to begin in November.

Inforpress added that the MCA had granted Cape Verde some US$110 million over the next five years for projects to fight poverty and build infrastructures, amongst others. (macauhub)
