Lisbon, Portugal, 11 Sept – The Portuguese economy grew 0.9 percent in the second quarter of 2006, against the same period of 2005, surpassing analysts’ expectations, figures published Friday in Lisbon by the National Statistics Institute showed.

The year on year growth rate of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter represents a slowdown of 0.2 percentage point as compared to the rate for the first quarter, but is clearly greater than analysts’ projections.

INE’s quarterly report showed that growth of the Portuguese economy was bolstered by exports, which rose 7.6 percent year on year.
