Portugal Telecom and ATM management company were Portuguese companies to invest most in R&D in 2005

Lisbon, Portugal, 06 Oct – Portugal Telecom (PT) and Sociedade Interbancária de Serviços (SIBS), the ATM network management company, were the two Portuguese companies to invest most in research and development (R&D) in 2005, a study published Thursday by the European Commission (EC) showed.

In a list of the 1,000 largest companies in the European Union (EU), ordered by amount invested in R&D, the telecommunications operator ranked 555th and SIBS ranked in 876th position.

Investment in European industry in R&D, led by DaimlerChrysler, showed that the 1,000 largest companies in the EU have increased their investment in R&D by an average of 5.3 percent last year.

The list includes 18 companies that are in the Top 50 in the world in terms of investment in R&D and five of the 10 companies in the world with greatest growth in R&D are also in the EU, the study said.

There is also a top ten list for Portugal of companies that invest most in R&D

The study on R&D investment in European Union industry is published every year by the EC, as part of its monitoring of investment in industrial research.

As well as the 1,000 biggest EU companies the study also includes a table with the 1,000 largest companies in the rest of the world. (macauhub)
