3GSM World Congress Asia to be held in Macau in November 2007

18 October 2006

Macau, China, 18 Oct – The 3GSM World Congress Asia will begin to be hosted by Macau in 2007 after three years of exponential growth in Singapore, the GSM Association said Tuesday in Singapore.

The 3GSM World Congress Asia is the Asian version of the European congress, which also saw a similar change of location when it left Cannes for Barcelona in 2006.

“The decision to change the 3GSM World Congress Asia to Macau is for many reasons, one of which is the fact that the territory is closer to China, Korea and Japan, which are the region’s technological innovation centers,” said Craig Ehrlich, president of the GSM Association.

He added that as a gateway to northern Asia, Macau was rapidly becoming an entertainment center in the region, with infrastructures built from scratch with the potential to help achieve the vision of developing the most important telecommunications event in Asia.

The next association congress will be held in the Venetian hotel, casino and convention center between November 15 and 17, 2007.

The GSM Association is a global group representing 700 mobile GSM telecommunications companies in 215 countries, with the main objective of ensuring universal access to mobile phone, particularly in rural areas, as a way of boosting the competitiveness of national economies, and creating business opportunities for operators and suppliers.
