Mozambique needs US$8.5 million to expand meteorological network

18 October 2006

Maputo, Mozambique, 18 Oct – Mozambique plans to collect US$8.5 million from international donors to fund the modernization and expansion of its meteorological network, the country’s Minister for Transport and Communication, António Muguambe said Tuesday in Maputo.

The minister, who was speaking on the sidelines of the 7th African Forum for the Users of Satellite Products of the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), said that with that objective the most recent council of ministers had approved the document defining the strategy for meteorological development until 2010.

Munguambe said that the main component of that strategy was professional training and noted that although the information was available if there were no people capable of interpreting, decoding and disclosing it this was of little use.

The meeting, which brought together specialists involved in reducing the effects of natural disasters, aimed to allow Mozambique and other African countries to benefit both individually and collectively from the services of the agencies and organizations operating in this sector. (macauhub)
