France hands over round table funding to Guinea Bissau

30 November 2006

Bissau, Guinea Bissau, 30 Nov – France was the first country to hand over the funding it had promised Guinea Bissau at the Geneva round table meeting at the beginning of November, officials said.

The convention to hand over 500,000 euros took place Wednesday in Bissau between Finance Minister Vitor Mandinga, and recently nominated French ambassador, Jean François Parot.

A source from Mandinga’s office said that the amount made available by the French government would be channelled to support the state budget, which is facing a high deficit, although it is covered by donor pledges.

According to Mandinga, other countries and organizations are currently formalizing the process for handing over their aid as part of a 270 million euro amount announced as the international community’s contribution to Guinea Bissau’s “recovery.” (macauhub)
