Over 20 million people visit Macau in 2006

Macau, China, 05 Dec – Macau has received over 20 million visitors this year, beating the record 18.7 million visitors recorded in 2005, a statement from the Macau Tourism Service said Monday.

With the figures available up to Sunday, the number of visitors by the end of the years could reach a minimum of 21.5 million after over 17 million visited Macau between January and October, a year on year rise of 15.85 percent.

Most of the visitors, 54 percent, were from Mainland China, but Macau also receives many tourists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, the United States, Singapore and Thailand.

As well as the many entertainment venues, Macau’s tourism promotion has been based on culture with the list of monuments and plazas classified as World Heritage Sites contributing to the diversification of local tourism. (macauhub)
