21 December 2006

Sao Tome, Sao Tome and Principe, 21 Dec – Portuguese national airline, TAP is to suspend its flights to Sao Tome and Principe due to the poor state of repair of the runway at the country’s only international airport, located in the Sao Tome capital, the airlines delegation said Wednesday.

According to the TAP representative in Sao Tome, Natasha D’Alva, the air link with Sao Tome and Principe will be cut as of January 13, 2007, and flight will be begin again when the runway is made safe.

TAP has recently borne heavy costs due to damage to its aircraft caused by the “bad condition” of the Sao Tome airport runway.

TAP is the only airline with direct flights to Sao Tome from Europe, via the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

TAP’s decision led to the Sao Tome government calling a ministerial meeting in order to find a solution to the problem. (macauhub)
