Portugal donates US$1 million to Guinea Bissau for budgetary aid

2 January 2007

Bissau, Guinea Bissau, 02 Jan – Portugal has handed a US$1 million donation in budgetary aid to the government of Guinea Bissau, thus fulfilling the promise made at a round table meeting with donors held in November in Switzerland, the Portuguese embassy in Bissau said Friday.

The figure is added to the US$9 million pledged by Lisbon during the round table meeting as Portugal’s contribution to support the State Budget and development projects in the health, education, public administration reform and other sectors.

Portugal is the second country to hand over funding pledged at the round table after France offered 500,000 euros to the Guinean government, around a month ago.

At the round table meeting, entitled “Stability and Development,” the government of Guinea Bissau obtained pledges totaling some US$262.5 million, although it had hoped to net around US$600 million. (macauhub)
