2 January 2007

Lisbon, Portugal, 02 Jan – Portuguese airline, TAP will keep flights to Sao tome and Principe after January 13, the company said Friday in Lisbon, thus cancelling a previous decision state to suspend all flights to the archipelago from that date for safety reasons.

In a statement, TAP said that the Sao Tome authorities had announced the beginning of work to repair the airport’s runway in the second week of January.

“in these circumstance, the company [TAP] has decided to maintain it operation to Sao Tome after January 13, and has already made tickets available for after that date,” the statement said.

On December 15, TAP had said it would suspend its weekly flight to Sao Tome as of January 13, 2007, if by January 12, “the necessary repair work on the runway of the local airport,” was not carried out.

On December 27, the Sao Tome minister of Public Works, Delfim Neves, told Macauhub that the Taiwanese government had donated US$900,000 to repair the runway of Sao Tome and Principe’s international airport. (macauhub)
