Mozambican government to publish report on Moatize coal mining “soon”

22 January 2007

Maputo, Mozambique, 22 Jan – the Mozambican government will soon publish its report on the feasibility study of the Moatize mining project carried out by Brazilian company Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), a government spokeswoman said in Maputo Saturday.

“I think we will make an announcement about the project within the schedule set,” said the Mozambican Minister of Mining Resources, Esperança Bias, noting that a multi-sector team had been created to analyze the document.

The Mozambican government recently said it would publish its opinion on the work, which began in November and took two months.

Moatize, located in Tete province, has around 2.5 billion tons of coal reserves and is one of the world’s largest.

As well as field studies, CVRd also carried out laboratory tests, engineering and market surveys including geo-technical work on the Nacala railroad in Nampula province. (macauhub)
