17 April 2007

Guangzhou, China, 17 April – The import section of the Spring Guangzhou Fair has exhibits from 314 foreign companies from 36 countries and regions, officials have said.

This is the first time in the history of the Guangzhou Fair that an area has been specifically set up for import of foreign products.

The introduction of imports aims to help reduce China’s trade surplus in relation to the rest of the world, which in n2006 rose 74 percent to US$178 billion, against US$102 billion the previous year.

At the fair, which changed its official name from Chinese Export Products Fair to Chinese Fair for Import and Export Products, the foreign companies present are from a wide variety of sectors.

At least 6,000 buyers from Chinese companies are expected to attend the fair.

The vice-minister for Trade said at the opening of the fair that China aimed to increase its imports of equipment and technologies, as well as though that made it possible to save energy.

Chines companies continue to dominate the fair, with 14,430 participants, 429 more than in the 2006 Fall edition of the fair.

Last year, over 190,000 buyers form all over the world signed deals at the Guangzhou Fair, which were valued at over US$34 billion.

The Chinese Fair for Import and Export products, also known as the Guangzhou Fair, has taken place twice a year in Spring and Fall since 1957. (macauhub)
