Rani Resorts plans new tourist development in Mozambique

18 May 2007

Maputo, Mozambique, 18 May – Rani Resorts has said it will build a tourist complex on the island of Santa Carolina in the Bazaruto archipelago in the south of Mozambique.

In a statement Thursday, Rani, aiming to be Mozambique’s biggest tourist sector investor, said the new resort would be built in the architectural style of the 1950s and 1960s. Work on the project is scheduled to start in 2009.

The location for the new development is on what many consider to be the “jewel” of the Bazaruto Islands. Although Santa Catarina is small, it lies in relatively deep waters so is ideal for fishing and other water sports.

Santa Carolina was a highly popular holiday destination during Portugal’s colonial era. Bob Dylan reputedly wrote his song “Mozambique” on the piano of the island’s original hotel before the area was abandoned during the country’s independence war and subsequent civil conflict.

Rani’s partner in the venture is Echo Delta Holdings, which holds the concession to the island. The project will bring Rani’s total of island and safari resorts in Mozambique to seven. (macauhub)
