Praia, Cape Verde, 21 June – The People’s Republic of China is to finance the construction of an outpatients center and a maternity ward at Agostinho Neto Hospital in Praia, Cape Verde, the new Chinese ambassador to Cape Verde, Wu Yuanshen pledged Wednesday.

After a meeting in Praia with Cape Verdean Prime Minister, José Maria Neves, Wu said that these projects were currently being approved for financing.

The new ambassador also said that he had discussed with the prime minister the construction of a national stadium in the country as well as of a new dam.

As well as this there is a possibility of launching in Cape Verde one of the five Special Economic Areas that China plans to set up on the African continent.

Cape Verde has had economic and technical cooperation from China and Beijing has funded several projects on the archipelago, such as the National Assembly, the Governmental Palace and the National Auditorium.

China also financed the Poilao Dam, the first in Cape Verde, on Santiago Island.

Relations between Praia and Beijing date back to 1976, with the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and China recently pardoned Cape Verde of a debt of 30 million yuan, which will be invested in the archipelago. (macauhub)
