EU preparing special partnership with Cape Verde

12 July 2007

Praia, Cape Verde, 12 July – A delegation from the European Commission arrives in Cape Verde Thursday for talks with the Praia government on the creation of a special partnership accord with the European Union, media reported.

Pana news agency said a declaration of the special partnership, outlining areas of convergence between Cape Verde and the EU, is seen as a key step to the ambition of the islands to gain a special status with Brussels. This goal depends on a favorable decision at an EU leaders’ summit from 12-13 December.

Cape Verde is pressing for the establishment of its special relationship with the EU to be approved during Portugal’s leadership of the bloc, which concludes at the end of the year.

In June, the European Commission’s director general for development, Stefano Manservisi, said Cape Verde could achieve special status with the EU by the end of the year.

Praia’s goal for closer EU ties is backed by Portugal, Spain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany. (macauhub)
