Maputo only Mozambican region with conditions for subsistence

20 July 2007

Maputo, Mozambique, 20 July – The city and province of Maputo in Mozambique are the only areas of the country where residents have acceptable levels of subsistence, media have reported.

Noticas newspaper cited economist Xavier Chavana on Thursday as saying this situation was due to a concentration of major development factors around the capital, including better work opportunities and social conditions.

Using official statistics on GDP and indices of human development, Chavana said that for the past three years the capital and its surrounding province have been the only parts of Mozambique with acceptable subsistence levels, with an minimum daily income of around 15 meticais (US$ 0.58).

“After the inhabitants of Maputo appear those of Beira, with a daily income of 3 meticais, with the rest of the county on 1.9 meticais,” added Chavana. (macauhub)
