Macau, China, 21 Aug – Macau’s working population for the first time exceeded 300,000 people, or 57 percent of the total population, according to figures published Monday by the Statistics and Census Bureau.
Official figures for March showed that Macau had a population of 520,400 inhabitants.
The figures for the end of the second quarter of the year, showed that there were 305,600 people of working age, of which 296,400 were employed and 9,200 were unemployed.
The figures for June of this year also reflected the creation of almost 100,000 new jobs since 1999, as in that year the working population totaled 209,500 people with 13,500 unemployed.
Macau’s unemployment rate stood at 3 percent, a figure that was achieved by creating jobs and increasing the working population as the unemployed population has remained stable at between 9,000 and 11,000 people.
The growth of the employed population is directly related to strong investment in building large projects for the gaming and gambling sector. (macauhub)
