Reactivation of Mozambican graphite mine dependent on power from Cahora Bassa dam

25 September 2007

Maputo, Mozambique, 25 Sept – The reactivation of a graphite mine in the Mozambican district of Ancuabe is dependent on a power supply from the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric dam, according to Mozambican newspaper Notícias.

The paper said that the national electricity network based on Cahora Bassa had not yet arrived in Ancuabe and that alternative energy sources were too expensive and would make the graphite produced unable to compete on the international market.

The government plans to restart graphite production and has been looking of investors, but members of the districts consultation council cited by the newspaper said that the mine’s equipment was obsolete and therefore a power supply was not the only problem.

The governor of Cabo Delgado province, Lazaro Mathe, said there had been a delay in linking Ancuabe to the national power grid, but added that electricity would reach all districts by December at the latest. (macauhub)
