Maputo, Mozambique, 26 Oct – The Bank of Mozambique Thursday praised Banco Internacional de Moçambique (Millennium BIM), which is majority owned by Portugal’s Millenium BCP, for the efforts it has made to expand into rural areas of Mozambique.

The statement was made by officials from the central bank at the opening of a Millenium BIM branch in the Zimpeto wholesale market, some 15 kilometers from the Mozambican capital.

Speaking at the opening, Joana David, a Bank of Mozambique director, praised this new step in bringing financial services closer to those who need it.

“The Bank of Mozambique is thankful for the opening of this branch outside Maputo, it is a reply in the challenge to provide financial services to the resident population in areas of the country lacking in banking products,” David said.

Millenium BIM also plans to open another branch in Boane district, some 45 kilometers from Maputo in the next few days.

Currently, Millenium BIM has 80 branches in Mozambique and a wide customer base,” said the chairman of the bank’s executive commission, João Figueiredo. (macauhub)
