Cape Verde: Third international airport opens and fourth due in 2008

1 November 2007

Praia, Cape Verde, 1 Nov – Since Wednesday Cape Verde has three international airports – on the islands of Sal, Santiago and Boavista – and the prime minister has announced the inauguration, next year, of another international airport on the island of Sao Vicente.

The announcement was made at opening of the Boavista Island International Airport which, according to the prime minister, José Maria das Neves, is “the realization of a dream for the people of Boavista and for all Cape Verdeans.”

The Island of Boavista will receive, over the next few years, large investments in the tourism area, of over 220 million euros, including construction of a road linking the whole island and a 2,000 room hotel.

Boavista is the third-largest island in the Cape Verde archipelago and one of the biggest in terms of tourist potential, with the longest beaches in the country.

The Cape Verde authorities estimated that, as of now, the island will receive several charter flights per week. (macauhub)
