Brazil: Portugal’s HLC group starts biodiesel production in Pernambuco state

Sao Paulo, Brazil, 6 Nov – Portuguese group HLC is due to begin production of biodiesel in the first quarter of 2008, in the city of Petrolina, in the interior of Pernambuco state, northeast Brazil, a spokesperson said.

Biodiesel do Vale do São Francisco (Biovasf), acquired just over a month ago by HLC environmental Holdings for 20 million reais, will have a production capacity of 80,000 tons per year.

The announcement was made by the chairman of HLC, Horácio Carvalho, during a meeting with the local authorities, according to a statement issued by the Government of Pernambuco.

The Portuguese group also acquired a sea terminal in Muquém, in Bahia state, also in northeastern Brazil, to transport biodiesel.

HLC began operating in Brazil, at the end of 2005, after acquiring the assets of SIF, a subsidiary of French power company EDF. (macauhub)
