29 November 2007

Tunis, Tunisia, 29 Nov – The African Development Bank (ADB) said Wednesday in Tunis it would provide US$18.86 million to fund a water and sanitation project in Sumbe, the capital of the Angolan province of Cuanza Sul.

According to a statement from the bank, the aim of the project “is to improve the access, quality and sustainability of the water supply and sanitation services in Sumbe and its outskirts.”

The project “will involve the rehabilitation and extension of the water supply and sanitation systems, as well as providing institutional support for training and operation of the facilities.”

Some 140,000 people are expected to benefit from the project, 70 percent of which live in semi-urban areas, the ADB added.

The total cost of the project is estimated at around US$38 million and the Angolan government is responsible for financing the remaining 50 percent. (macauhub)
