Guinea Bissau: First ATMs arrive in country

18 December 2007

Bissau, Guinea Bissau, 18 Dec – The first two automatic teller machines (ATMs) in Guinea Bissau were set up Friday in Bissau and Gabu, at the service of Banco da África Ocidental.

This is the first time that Guinea Bissau has had ATMs, allowing the bank’s customers, foreigners living in Guinea Bissau and tourists to withdraw cash using Visa, Visa Electron and Mastercard.

Thus far, Bissau’s residents without an account in the BAO had to transfer money to Western Union or businesspeople’s bank accounts in Guinea Bissau.

In order to have access to cash people also had to make check withdrawals directly at BAO’s branches, dealing with long lines of people. (macauhub)
