Maputo, Mozambique, 27 Dec – Irish mining company Kenmare Resources has begun exporting ilmenite from heavy mineral sands mines at Moma in Nampula province, the Noticias newspaper reported Wednesday.
Kenmare began its ilmenite exports with a 23,000 ton shipment, the article said.
The Moma mine, opened by President Armando Guebuza last October, gives Mozambique the capacity to produce 6 percent of annual world output of the ilmenite derivatives zircon and rutile.
The mine has an annual production capacity for 800,000 tons of ilmenite, 56,000 tons of zircon and 21,000 tons of rutile. Heavy mineral sands products are used in the manufacture of paint, plastic, ceramics the aviation industry and orthopedic items, among other products. (macauhub)
