4 January 2008

Macau, China, 4 Jan – Macau’s international airport was used in 2007 by a record 5.49 million passengers, a year-on-year increase of 11 percent, the airport’s management company said Thursday in Macau.

The airport, which was opened in November 1995, was built to receive a maximum of 6 million passengers per year.

Last year the amount of cargo handled was 180,935 tons, which was an annual fall of 18 percent, and mail fell 2 percent to 195 tons.

Recently, the head of the Macau government, Edmund Ho, said the government would take on the entire capital of the airport in order to ensure its future development.

The government currently has a 55.4 percent stake in the airport, and the remainder is in the hands of Stanley Ho’s Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau (STDM) and other local and mainland China shareholders. (macauhub)
