Mozambique: Italy funds traditional fishing in two provinces

Maputo, Mozambique, 16 Jan – Italy plans to fund traditional fishing in the Mozambican provinces of Gaza and Inhambane, under the terms of an agreement signed Tuesday in Maputo, which includes a donation of 3 million euros.

Present at the signing were Mozambican Fisheries Minister, Cadmiel Muthemba, Italy’s ambassador to Mozambique, Guido Larcher, and the United Nations representative for food and Agriculture, Maria Zimmerman.

The project supported by Italy will last for three years and aims to benefit 60,000 families in Gaza and Inhambane and is coordinated b the national Institute for Development of Small-scale Fishing and funds will be managed by the UN.

Italy’s donation will be used to improve the techniques used by traditional fishermen, to provide loans to individual fishermen or associations and to improve the systems for preserving, processing and selling the fish. (macauhub)
