Angola: Sumbe district in Kwanza Sul province to start producing cotton with support from China

Sumbe, Angola, 17 Jan – The government of the Angolan province of Kwanza Sul, Sarafim do Prado, said Wednesday in Sumbe that conditions had been set up to re-launch large-scale cotton production in Sumbe district.

According to Prado, cited by Angolan news agency Angop, Everything is ready and funding for the project has been secured.

For the launch of this project, in June 2005 a financing memorandum was signed in Luanda between the Ministry fo Agriculture and Rural Development and China’s Eximbank. The project is estimated to cost US$40 million.

The project is expected to provide employment to 1,914 families and includes construction of irrigation facilities, which will be carried out by South Korean companies, Samsung Corporation and Hanil Engineering & Construction.

The last cotton production season in the district was in 1999-200 and providing a harvest of 500 tons of cotton. (macauhub)
