East Timor: China provides US$1.5 billion in aid

Dili, East Timor, 30 Jan – China and East Timor Tuesday in Dili signed cooperation agreements, which will lead to the Beijing government providing Dili with aid of US$1.57 billion.

The agreements were signed by East Timor’s Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and by China’s deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Wu Dawei, the most senior Chinese official ever to visit East Timor.

At the end of the ceremony Gusmão told journalists that the agreements covered technical and economic cooperation, construction of a soldiers’ barracks and acquisition of equipment for the Timorese Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Wu, who arrived in Dili Tuesday for a three-day visit to East Timor, is due to meet with parliamentary president, Fernando Lasama and other parliamentary leaders Wednesday. (macauhub)
