Angola: Germany funds water supply project

10 March 2008

Luanda, Angola, 10 March – The German government has donated 12 million euros to finance building of a water pipeline from the Kalueque dam to the city of Ondjiva in the Angolan province of Cunene, officials said.

State news agency Angop cited Energy Minister Carolino Mendes as saying the project is due to get underway in the second half of this year and will last for two years.

The water-supply project includes installation of new pumps, building of a distribution network and repair of pipes between Santa Clara and the city of Ondjiva over a distance of 41 kilometers.

The provincial director for energy and water, Bonifacio Kahupo, said the project was proceeding as part of a cooperation accord inked with Namibia in July, 2003. Both states benefit from the Kalueque dam situated on their common border.

The city of Ondjiva has faced water-supply problems since 1999 due to the poor condition of the distribution system and problems on the pipeline coming from Namibia. (macauhub)
