China: Govt to build Beijing-Fuzhou railway

Beijing, China, 12 March -The Chinese government plans to build a railway between Beijing and Fujian province aimed to speed up economic development of the coastal region close to Taiwan, Xinhua news agency reported Monday.

Trains will operate on the new line at over 300 kph and building will get underway in 2010 under an accord signed in Beijing by the Ministry of Railways and the Fujian provincial government.

The new line will begin in the city of Bengbu, in Anhui province, linking Beijing and Shanghai, then crossing the provinces of Anhui and Jiangxi, via Hefei, Huangshan and Shangrao, before arriving in Fujian and terminating in the provincial capital, Fuzhou.

Fujian is developing an special economic zone intended to deepen ties between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, including the neighboring provinces of Jiangxi and Guangdong. (macauhub)
