Macau: China and Brazil express interest in working together in Portuguese speaking countries

Macau, China, 17 Mar – representatives of China and Brazil, who last week took part in the Macau Forum, have told Macauhub that they intend working together on projects within the Portuguese-speaking world

“We (China and Brazil) can widen our cooperation, work together in other Portuguese speaking countries and promote work in several different areas in these”, Zhao Chuang told macauhub, commercial adviser for the department of International Cooperation of China’s Ministry of Trade, and recently nominated permanent General Secretary for the Forum on Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese speaking world.

For two days (10th and 11th March), the fourth ordinary meeting of the Macau Forum’s Permanent Secretary brought together 50 government representatives from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, China, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal and East Timor.

Zhao Chuang, present at the meeting, told macauhub that he can see opportunities for cooperation between China and Brazil, particularly in the areas of finance, infrastructures, investments, exchange of technology, agriculture, fishing and mineral exploration.

Zhao Chuang said that he had already contacted the Brazilian Ambassador in Peking, and they had exchanged ideas that from now on they will be able to work on in more depth.

“We are working towards the possibility of closer cooperation between Brazil and China. The Chinese, the Brazilians and also the Portuguese can work together on projects in Africa or East Timor, for example. The Forum can contribute to this in that it brings together authorities and companies from different countries”, the ambassador Castro Neves told macauhub.

Trade between the Portuguese Speaking World and China increased by 36 percent in 2007 to US$46.35 billion.

The forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese speaking world was set up in 2003, by the Chinese government to promote trade relations with the Portuguese speaking world. (macauhub)
