20 May 2008

Dundo, Angola, 20 May – Russian company Alrosa is to start on rebuilding the Luachimo hydroelectric dam, in the Angolan province of Luanda Norte, by building anew concrete structure and installing modern technology, the company’s technical director said in Dundo.

Alexandre Guertchikov said that, after carrying out feasibility studies for the company’s recuperation, it was decided that the project would be carried out in two stages, the first of which will take a year and the second a further 24 months.

Without giving precise figures for investment, Guertchikov added that electricity production would increase to 24 megawatts, which was three times the current installed capacity.

Alrosa, one of the biggest diamond mining companies in the world, also builds dams and is responsible for building the Chicapa hydroelectric dam in Lunda Sul province.

The Luachimo hydroelectric dam went into operation in 1953 with four turbines and in its 55 years’ of existence has never undergone any significant refurbishment work. (macauhub)
