Cape Verde: Cape Verde may become platform for trade with China

28 May 2008

Praia, Cape Verde, 28 May – The chairman of Cabo Verde Investimentos, Alexandre Fontes, said Tuesday in Praia that Cape Verde may become a platform for trade between China and African countries.

He made the statement in a press conference, to present the 4th Matting if Businesspeople for Economic and Trade Cooperation Between China and the Portuguese-speaking Nations that is due to start Wednesday and end on 30 May in Praia, entitled, “Cape Verde as a platform for trading and services.”

According to Fontes, Cape Verde could be that platform due to its geo-strategic position in relation to the African continent, taking advantage of the agreements it has with the European Union and its political and social stability.

As well as this, he said that the archipelago had already signed a deal with China to transform the port of Mindelo and shipyard Estaleiros Navais de Cabo Verde (Cabnave) into a fishing centre.

Amongst others the following will be in Cape Verde: Agência para o Investimento e Comércio Externo de Portugal (AICEP), Brazil’s APEX (Agência Brasileira de Promoções e Exportações), the Angola Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Mozambique’s IPEX (Instituto de Promoção e Exportações).

The CCPIT (China Council for Promotion of International Trade) and Macau’s IPIM, as well as the secretary-general of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, will also attend. (macauhub)
