Maputo, Mozambique, 11 July – United Arab Emirates group Rani Resorts is preparing the architectural project of a luxury tourist resort to be built on the island of Santa Carolina, on the Bazuruto archipelago, in Mozambique’s Inhambane province, according to a report in newspaper Notícias.
Representing an investment of around US$50 million, the project is due to be presented to the government by the end of this year, for approval.
The former Hotel Santa Carolina, which had 100 rooms, is currently in ruins. It was built in the 1960s and the complex included a landing strip and a chapel, which is also in ruins.
Santa Carolina is currently the only island without tourist accommodation, out of the group of the four most important islands in the Bazuruto archipelago.
The new project also includes construction of a 50-room hotel, with restaurants, bars, fishing and diving centres, tennis courts and spas, amongst other facilities.
The renovation of Santa Carolina is a partnership between the Rani Resorts group and Britain’s Echos Delta Holding group, which holds the concession on Santa Carolina, since 2006.
Santa Carolina island is 3,000 metres long and 500 metres wide and is located in the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (PNB), which includes the islands of Magaruque, Benguerra, Bazaruto and Rangue.
The Rani Resorts group has a chain of luxury hotels in Mozambique, including on the islands of Bazaruto, in Inhambane, Medjumbe and Matemo, on the Quirimbas archipelago, in Cabo Delgado, amongst other resorts. (macauhub)
