Mozambique: Farming sector grows in Q1

Maputo, Mozambique, 4 Aug – Mozambique’s agriculture sector grew from 12.5 percent of GDP in the first three months of 2007 to 23.3 percent in the same period this year, Agriculture Minister Soares Nhaca has said.

Cited by the Noticias newspaper, the minister said the Maputo government has recently being implementing a “green revolution” aimed to promote boosted farming production that is both competitive and sustainable.

In coming days, officials from Maputo’s agriculture ministry, including Nhaca, will meet in Malema in Nampula province to discuss problems in the sector in order to speed up Mozambique’s green revolution to respond to steadily rising food prices.

Official figures show that after faming, Mozambique’s manufacturing sector showed the largest expansion in the first quarter of the year compared to 2007, contributing to 12.8 of GDP. (macauhub)
