Angola: US company Dole Food considers investment in Angola

26 August 2008

Luanda, Angola, 26 Aug – US company Dole Food Co. Inc, a large world producer of fruit and vegetables, is analysing an investment in the agricultural sector in Angola, in Benguela province, a local banana producer said Monday in Luanda.

According to the Reuters news agency, Manuel Monteiro, Angola’s largest banana producer said he had met Saturday with representatives of Dole Food who showed interest in investing in the banana industry in Angola.

“They are very interested in investing in Angola,” said Monteiro who gave no further details.

Dole Food rival company, Chiquita Brands International, recently partnered Escom, of Portuguese group Espírito Santo, to invest in the banana industry in Angola.

Angola used to be a large producer of bananas, coffee, sugar cane, sisal and cotton until the civil war, which followed independence from Portugal, led to plantations being abandoned and thus a halt to production. (macauhub)
